{"id":102394,"date":"2025-11-23T08:18:27","date_gmt":"2025-11-23T08:18:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neclink.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/23\/waymo-gets-regulatory-approval-to-expand-across-bay-area-and-southern-california\/"},"modified":"2025-11-23T08:18:27","modified_gmt":"2025-11-23T08:18:27","slug":"waymo-gets-regulatory-approval-to-expand-across-bay-area-and-southern-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neclink.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/23\/waymo-gets-regulatory-approval-to-expand-across-bay-area-and-southern-california\/","title":{"rendered":"Waymo gets regulatory approval to expand across Bay Area and Southern California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waymo continues to expand its reach, with the robotaxi company <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/waymo\/status\/1991989888778973280\">posting<\/a> Friday that it\u2019s now \u201cofficially authorized to drive fully autonomously across more of the Golden State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waymo already operates in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Los Angeles (and outside California as well, in Atlanta, Austin, and Phoenix). But maps <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/vehicle-industry-services\/autonomous-vehicles\/autonomous-vehicle-testing-permit-holders\/waymo-approved-areas-of-operation-for-driverless-testing-and-deployment\/\">published<\/a> by California\u2019s Department of Motor Vehicles showed that the company can now test and deploy its autonomous vehicles across a much larger area in both the Bay Area and Southern California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Bay Area, Waymo\u2019s approved areas of operation now include most of the East Bay and North Bay (including Napa\/Wine Country), as well as Sacramento. In Southern California, the company\u2019s approved territory now stretches from Santa Clarita (north of Los Angeles) to San Diego.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company will need additional regulatory approval before it can carry paying passengers in some of these regions, <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/tech\/article\/california-waymo-robotaxi-expansion-21201623.php\">according to the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Waymo\u2019s post doesn\u2019t offer many details about when it plans to actually start offering rides in all these new areas, the company wrote, \u201cNext stop: welcoming riders in San Diego in mid-2026!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company had previously announced its intention to launch in San Diego next year, along with Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, San Antonio, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s been plenty of Waymo expansion news in the past couple weeks, as the company announced that it will be <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/11\/20\/waymo-enters-3-more-cities-minneapolis-new-orleans-and-tampa\/\">entering Minneapolis, New Orleans, and Tampa<\/a>; is <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/11\/18\/waymo-removes-safety-drivers-in-miami-ahead-of-2026-launch\/\">removing safety drivers<\/a> ahead of its commercial launch in Miami; and will <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/11\/12\/waymo-robotaxis-are-now-giving-rides-on-freeways-in-these-3-cities\/\">start offering rides that use freeways<\/a> in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-techcrunch-inline-cta\">\n<div class=\"inline-cta__wrapper\">\n<p>Techcrunch event<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-cta__content\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"inline-cta__location\">San Francisco<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"inline-cta__separator\">|<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"inline-cta__date\">October 13-15, 2026<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We discussed the growth of Waymo and other robotaxi companies on the latest episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/podcasts\/equity\/\">the Equity podcast<\/a>.
