She was using\u00a0an\u00a0Oura ring and the Whoop monitoring band and\u00a0getting\u00a0insights about\u00a0her body, but there\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0a device that could provide data about one of the most important aspects\u00a0\u2014 reproductive and\u00a0menstrual\u00a0health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt seemed crazy to me, because these are things that every woman wants to be able to track and better understand,\u201d she told TechCrunch. She thought to herself: Why not make a wearable device\u00a0that can tell\u00a0someone\u00a0more about their reproductive health? She penned a letter to one of the engineers at Dyson, made a connection, and started testing the idea.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFive years later, following thousands of\u00a0designs\u00a0and iterations and extended user testing, we\u2019ve revealed the world\u2019s first smart menstrual cup,\u201d said Button.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK-based company <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/01\/emm-series-seed\/\">has also raised<\/a> a $9 million (\u00a36.8 million)\u00a0 seed\u00a0round, one led by Lunar Ventures as it prepares to officially launch its product next year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The product functions like a regular menstrual cup \u2014\u00a0designed to\u00a0store period blood\u00a0rather than absorb it.\u00a0But Emm\u2019s medical-grade\u00a0silicone\u00a0is\u00a0\u201cfitted with ultra-thin, advanced sensor technology.\u201d\u00a0This sensor gathers data that will\u00a0help\u00a0users\u00a0understand\u00a0patterns\u00a0about\u00a0their\u00a0cycles.\u00a0Button hopes that\u00a0it could \u201ctransform the research, diagnosis and\u00a0treatment\u00a0of\u00a0menstrual\u00a0and reproductive health\u00a0conditions.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0the only one who thinks this way.\u00a0Other\u00a0femtech\u00a0founders told\u00a0The Guardian<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/ng-interactive\/2025\/oct\/27\/menstrual-period-blood-testing-womens-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0a few months ago<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0menstrual blood was an \u201coverlooked\u00a0opportunity\u00a0in women\u2019s health\u201d\u00a0that could offer\u00a0insights\u00a0not available from health tests based on circulatory blood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could, for instance, help diagnose\u00a0painful and\u00a0often misdiagnosed\u00a0medical conditions like endometriosis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-techcrunch-inline-cta\">\n<div class=\"inline-cta__wrapper\">\n<p>Techcrunch event<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-cta__content\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"inline-cta__location\">San Francisco<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"inline-cta__separator\">|<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"inline-cta__date\">October 13-15, 2026<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne in ten women today\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.endofound.org\/morethan1in10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">suffer from endometriosis<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0Button said. \u201cA condition that, like many others in reproductive health, takes an average of seven to ten years to diagnose.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That delay\u00a0\u201cis\u00a0largely due\u00a0to the lack of meaningful data and poor\u00a0characterization\u00a0of menstrual health in clinical settings,\u201d\u00a0Button believes. \u201cThere have been no reliable tools to accurately and objectively track that aspect of health until now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond endometriosis, she added that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/survey-reveals-women-experience-severe-reproductive-health-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">one in three women<\/a>\u00a0experiences \u201csevere reproductive health issues\u201d throughout their lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data gathered from the Emm app is\u00a0encrypted and stored securely,\u00a0with two-factor authentication.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s also always anonymized or pseudonymized,\u201d meaning personal identifiers are removed or replaced with codes, \u201cand will only be accessed by the people at Emm who\u00a0genuinely\u00a0need it,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Button used the word \u201cstrategic\u201d to describe her funding round\u00a0and said\u00a0she connected\u00a0with her lead investor through her network. Others in the round include Alumni Ventures (who backed Oura), The Labcorp Venture Fund and\u00a0BlueLion\u00a0Global. Money will be used to launch the product\u00a0into\u00a0the UK market next year, she said, adding that the waitlist has\u00a0already topped\u00a030,000 pre-orders to go live soon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capital will also be used for research and development.\u00a0Button\u00a0hopes to\u00a0enter the U.S. market\u00a0in early 2027.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMenstrual health is only the jumping off point for Emm,\u201d said Button. \u201cUltimately, I\u00a0believe we will have a profound impact on women\u2019s health more broadly,\u201d she continued, adding she hopes to expand the product\u00a0one day,\u00a0perhaps into\u00a0diagnosis, other digital care tools, and even\u00a0therapeutics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur mission is to accelerate diagnosis, equip people with the data to advocate for themselves, and\u00a0ultimately help\u00a0them take control of their own bodies and health journeys,\u201d\u00a0she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/11\/18\/emm-raises-9m-seed-to-create-to-launch-one-of-the-worlds-first-smart-menstrual-cups\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jenny Button first thought of Emm during the COVID lockdown.
