\u201cI had no idea how to dress casually until I moved to California,\u201d says Kelsey Keith<\/a>, who previously lived in NYC for a decade. \u201cI still wear all black to school pick-up, so it\u2019s not like the New Yorker has left the building, but now I also own a pair of hiking shoes.\u201d Kelsey, the creative director of MillerKnoll<\/a>, also writes one of our favorite design Substacks<\/a>. Here, the Berkeley resident shares five outfits she wore in a week, plus secondhand shopping tips\u2026<\/p>\n

\"Week<\/p>\n

Shirt: Banana Republic<\/a> (available on resale sites<\/a>.) Skirt: \u201cancient Zara.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI usually only turn to mall brands for basics, but Banana Republic has gotten really good recently. I love this shirt<\/a> \u2014 it\u2019s well-made, and the ripstop material is nice. Their pull-on black pants<\/a> are also perfect. I try not to buy new pieces very often, but there are several<\/a> other<\/a> things<\/a> on their site I\u2019ve got my eye on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Necklace: similar<\/a>. Bracelet: \u201cdesigned by midcentury designer Fran Hosken, available through the Hosken Archive<\/a>.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDuring college, I studied abroad in Paris. While there, I made my way to Venice, then took a 24-hour ferry to Greece \u2014 I had a deck ticket. But Greece is amazing, so however you can get there works. I bought this Bees of Malia pendant on that trip. It\u2019s a replica of a relic<\/a> dated to 1650 B.C.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cardigan: Agnes B.<\/a>, \u201cbought secondhand.\u201d Pants: Banana Republic<\/a>. Clogs: Rothy\u2019s<\/a>, \u201cthese are my house slippers, and they\u2019re nuts comfortable.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIf something costs more than I want to pay, I\u2019ll try to find it on a resale site. I use Gem<\/a> to set an alert in my size so that I get an email if they come up for sale. I\u2019m very, very patient. Gem alerts are also a great way to get clarity on an item\u2019s average price on the secondhand market.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rings: \u201cEngagement ring by Lola Brooks<\/a>, wedding bands by J. Hannah<\/a>, antique quilt band ring from Oko<\/a> in Portland.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBefore we got engaged, my husband and I looked at options together and narrowed it down, and then he made the final choice. My engagement ring is from Lola Brooks, and I think it looks like a galaxy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shirt: vintage Benetton, \u201cscreamin\u2019 deal, maybe $30, never worn.\u201d Jeans: DL1961<\/a>. Belt: \u201cmy mom\u2019s,\u201d similar<\/a>. Bangle: \u201cTaxco silver<\/a>, bought in Mexico City.\u201d Necklace: Tiffany & Co.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the reason why texture is so interesting is that the craft is evident. With a thick wool sweater or a delicately embroidered shirt, you can see the material and the construction. If I\u2019m dressing in one color, there\u2019s usually a textural shift in what I\u2019m wearing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Week<\/p>\n

Shoes: Stoffa<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOn a given week, 10 pieces of clothing will end up piled on a chair, and I\u2019ll swap things in or out. I don\u2019t like to be precious with clothing. I\u2019m looking for stuff that\u2019s well-made and will hold up to a lot of wear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweatshirt: Hey Gang<\/a>. Skirt: KasMaria<\/a>. Socks: Le Bon Shoppe<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cClaire McCardell was a mid-century American fashion designer, who pioneered things like pockets in women\u2019s clothing, even though male designers didn\u2019t understand why women would need them. [She also made zippers easy to reach because a woman \u2018may live alone and like it, but you may regret it if you wrench your arm trying to zip a back zipper into place.\u2019] This new book about her<\/a> is amazing. Everyone should read it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shoes: Clarks<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIf your feet hurt, you won\u2019t enjoy yourself, no matter what else is going on. Wallabies, an old-man classic, are extremely comfortable. They go with everything because they\u2019re kind of anti-fashion. Whenever I need a new-to-me pair, I\u2019ll find them on a resale site like eBay \u2014\u00a0a good tip for classics, if you know your size!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweatshirt: Rachel Comey<\/a>, \u201call over resale\u2014set an alert on Gem<\/a>. Pants: Le Bon Shoppe<\/a>. Ring: \u201cborrowed from my five-year-old daughter.\u201d Sunglasses: Illesteva<\/a>. Pouch: Dr. Max\u2019s<\/a>. Socks: Target, similar<\/a>. Sneakers: Merrell Wildwood Aerosport<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cLiving in California, surrounded by nature, you end up being pretty outdoorsy by default, and because you\u2019re always doing outdoor things, you dress casually. Merrell needs to bring back these Wildwood Aerosports<\/a> immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Week<\/p>\n

\u201cMy youngest child is now out of diapers, so I don\u2019t have to schlep everything everywhere. Sometimes I\u2019m like, I\u2019m only taking what fits in a little pouch<\/a>!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI spent many years as a design editor, and I apply that mindset to clothes, too. I\u2019m ruthless about making sure I only have things that I really like to wear. That\u2019s the trick for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
