Starshield is a classified version of SpaceX&#8217;s Starlink satellite network offered on contract to government agencies &#8220;to support national security efforts,&#8221; according to the <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/starshield\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:company's website;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">company&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">The report is based on findings from amateur satellite tracker Scott Tilley, who observed what appeared to be Starshield satellites broadcasting on frequencies normally dedicated to &#8220;uplink&#8221; transmissions from the Earth to satellites in orbit. Using the frequencies that way violates <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/dms_pubrec\/itu-r\/rec\/sa\/R-REC-SA.1154-0-199510-I!!PDF-E.pdf\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:standards;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">standards<\/a> set by the <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/Pages\/default.aspx\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:International Telecommunication Union;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">International Telecommunication Union<\/a>, a United Nations agency dedicated to coordinating the use of radio spectrum across the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">Standards around which frequencies are used for uplink and downlink broadcasts to satellites were created to avoid interference, among other technical issues. &#8220;Nearby satellites could receive radio-frequency interference and could perhaps not respond properly to commands \u2014 or ignore commands \u2014 from Earth,&#8221; Tilley told <em>NPR<\/em>. It&#8217;s not clear yet whether SpaceX ignoring these rules is causing any issues with satellite communication, but should problems arise, there&#8217;s now a possible cause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">SpaceX&#8217;s first major Starshield project was <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/spacex-lands-us-space-force-contract-for-starshield-satellite-communications-085045883.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:a $70 million contract;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">a $70 million contract<\/a> with US Space Force in 2023.
